Antique Furniture

What kind of furniture is it?
I am looking at a wardrobe in my parents’ house, over one hundred years old. It is made of beech wood and wares its age well. I believe I could renovate it myself although I am not specifically skilful in that area. It just needs a bit of glitter. It is that well kept even without any special maintenance!

Now, again, what kind of furniture is it?
It is an old wardrobe with a door and two drawers. There are beautiful old custom made handles, and the wardrobe itself was built specially for my ancestors, as a wedding gift. It tells of our history, as does all the antique furniture all over the world.

So, it is inheritance left for us by our ancestors. And the fact that it is handwork and good materials that were then being used guarantee quality and very often uniqueness. This is exactly the case with the old beech wood wardrobe I am looking at right now.

Antique Furniture vs. Modern Furniture
Uniqueness. Isn’t it great to have something no one else has? There are no large series, no repetition… Imagine having furniture in your home that hundreds thousands of other homes have too. In fact, you do have that kind of furniture, I do too. What kind of beauty is it when we have to share it with others? Functionality. That’s right. It all comes down to functionality and huge production series. Manufacturers, who offer their buyers greater freedom in choosing their own elements, colours and functions, in fact give them a certain amount of originality that will offer a more lasting value.

Modern Manufacturers of Antique Replicas
It is all very nice, but we are still dealing with large series as with any other modern furniture. As all historical things, the older it is, the more valuable it gets. Of course, preservation is the key value, especially when we deal with rare things. Still, the difference in prices between originals and replicas is huge. If you collect antique furniture, you are engaged in one of the most costly hobbies in the world. You then have to preserve it. You have to watch temperature of the room it is in, be careful with the vermin, damages, pollution, light and so forth…On the other hand, owning or purchasing such furniture can be a very good investment which, at the same time, makes your home more beautiful. You can make it a business, as if it is rare and well kept, it is very much wanted. And all wanted things tend to get very valuable.

Maybe this article will encourage you to look for advertisements with antique furniture and find something for yourself or to take a peek into your parents' home and find a fragment of history that has always been watching you without you even being aware of it.
